Human | Machine

Chapter 01. June 2017

In a future where machines will take our jobs, the artist will have the conscious action as a unique bit of freedom. Artificial Intelligence is already replicating styles of the great masters. It is easy to apply any style imaginable to a digital format. Even in the physical space, machines receive orders & even take their own decisions.

Disclaimer: A Heian-zô creation

The choice of decision. How does the weather affect each of every single stroke we apply? How does my back pain or good news make my moves different?

Three pieces made this specific series. Each one of an original of 100×70 piece of watercolour paper. The three artworks coexist together and were created to be displayed close in the same space.

What do we have left as creators?

Concept & research

The first piece: The whole into pieces

A complex algorithm broken into modular pieces I. The piece of paper was cut into 10×10 uneven parts. A machine would rather cut them in a more accurate way. Even a human with different intentions.

The future appears as an aggregation of actions. The painting was painted as a whole and then cut into pieces, which could not make sense as single elements. What is important here is that each single piece counts for the final outcome.

The second piece: A complex algorithm broken into modular pieces II

A complex algorithm broken into modular pieces II. Following the previous piece. How does the original creation of the individual parts affect the altogether?

Here the paintings & actions born to be individual. Although the future is still there. Does the message improve? Does the all still work? Of course, still it does! But at what price? What do we gain in favour?

The third & last piece: The future is not randomly generated

Created ad hoc for the context. A single unified message arrives stronger & clearer.

The future is made by each of the single actions we take in the present. So take action now, do not complain later for what is in your hands. Every single conscious action makes the artwork in the same way as the future.
